We know we echo the thoughts of the whole community when we send our deepest sympathy to Rose and Brian Askew, the mother and brother of David who tragically died on Wednesday evening.

Many people will know Rose from her voluntary work at Hattersley’s credit union, where she was one of the founding members. David’s death will rightly cast a huge shadow over our community for a long time to come, as we look at how such a terrible thing could happen here and how we prevent the same thing from happening to anyone else in the future.

But for now let us spare a thought for a mother and brother who have suffered a devastating loss. And let us also not forget that the youths who tormented David and his family are a minority in Hattersley and that the majority are decent young people.
