March 2010
We know we echo the thoughts of the whole community when we send our deepest sympathy to Rose and Brian Askew, the mother and brother of David who tragically died on Wednesday evening.
Many people will know Rose from her voluntary work at Hattersley’s credit union, where she was one of the founding members. David’s death will rightly cast a huge shadow over our community for a long time to come, as we look at how such a terrible thing could happen here and how we prevent the same thing from happening to anyone else in the future.
But for now let us spare a thought for a mother and brother who have suffered a devastating loss. And let us also not forget that the youths who tormented David and his family are a minority in Hattersley and that the majority are decent young people.

A tribute to David, a loving
A tribute to David, a loving brother and son
Who suffered for years the troubles of some
Trying to live his life with people who care
But suffering the torments he couldn’t share
Bullied by thugs with limited skills
Who challenged his character for their cheap thrills
He deserved better from the people who stared
And witnessed his treatment but didn’t really care
They rally around now but it’s far too late
For his mother and brother who witnessed his fate
So rest in peace now David and suffer no more
While society seeks a bullying cure.

Rose and Brian
We can not begin to understand how Rose and Brian are suffering at this time, and I know it is small comfort to them, but the thoughts of the many good, decent, caring people in Hattersley are with you both.
