The history of Hattersley

July 2010

H & M Community Media’s (HMCM) volunteer co-ordinator Clare Panter has been talking to a group of residents about a new project to develop the ‘Hattersley & Mottram area’ pages of our website.

The residents she met with are keen to get involved in the project which will see the history of Hattersley, from its beginnings in the early 60’s right through to the present day, documented online.

Before the team get started they want to meet with Hattersley Neighbourhood Partnership’s marketing manger, Chris and older people's worker Helen to find out if HNP are interested in getting involved.

We are still at the early planning stages so if you're interested in getting involved just give Clare a call on 0161 368 5171, any day except Friday, or you can email her at clare.panter@hmcm.org.uk

Watch out for more information about the project in the Hattersley & Mottram Community News and right here on our website.

Hattersley has been inhabited since Saxon times and there are the remains of a Celtic fort 4 miles South East of the estate.

The Romans built a fort to guard the entrances to the Longendale and Snake Pass, so must have been somewhere near.

When the Romans left the site was re-occupied by the Celts. There is legend of a battle between the Celts and Saxons on the site.
